HARIBAN AWARD 2021 Grand Prize Winner Solo Exhibition "Master Rituals II : Weston's Nudes“ by Tarrah Krajnak
Benrido is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Tarrah Krajnak, the grand prize winner of the International Collotype Photography Competition 2021. The exhibition will feature 16 collotype prints from the series Master Rituals II: Weston's Nudes. About the series „Master Rituals II : Weston's Nudes“ In my series Master Rituals I grapple with the problematic canons of modern American photography and engage with the legacies of “master” photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. I use the camera, my body and performance to engage with their work through acts of erasure, redaction, and reenactment. Part homage and part critique, the work opens a dialogue with these “father figures”, as well as a conversation with its contemporary audience. In the second chapter of the work Weston’s Nudes I re-enact Edward Weston’s iconic nude studies as both the photographer and subject rewriting my body into the canon. In works such as Self-Portrait as Weston/as Bertha Wardell, 1927/2020 I look at the ways in which women of color have been cut from photography’s canon, as well as how the women who put their bodies in the service of Weston’s work found their heads, faces, and intellectual contributions to Weston’s oeuvre cropped from the history of the medium.
