Da Zhong Zhi Zheng - The Road of Freedom

As a photographer who frequently travels across Taiwan, I've noticed an intriguing phenomenon: there are over 300 streets named "Zhongzheng Road" scattered throughout the island. This led me to delve deeper into the historical significance of these streets, particularly their association with the late President Chiang Kai-shek of the Republic of China. As I explored this connection, I also delved into the art of aerial photography, seeking to capture and reflect upon the landscapes below.

The culmination of my exploration is a project titled "Great Zhongzheng," a collection of hundreds of aerial photographs meticulously combined. In this creation, I intentionally reconstructed the documented Zhongzheng Roads along with the surrounding buildings and landscapes. The focal point remains the iconic Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, positioned at the heart of the composition. Surrounding it are temples, traditional courtyard houses, and structures resembling the National Theater and Concert Hall. On one side, the scene features modern skyscrapers gleaming brightly, while the other side showcases the diverse industries that sustain Taiwan, including manufacturing, fishing, and agriculture. The entire cityscape is enveloped by Taiwan's breathtaking seascape, symbolically presented as an "island."

Through this methodical arrangement and rearrangement akin to a chessboard, I aim to convey the sense of authority and influence that Zhongzheng once held over Taiwan. Yet, amidst this portrayal of power, the interconnected Zhongzheng Roads on the island reflect a paradoxical openness and closure, appearing cyclical depending on one's perspective.
