CONNECTION

Now & Then Kyoto

“Dance is a powerful communication tool that brakes boundaries and unites people. It is a language that doesn’t need a translation.” - these thoughts came to Yulia during her work as an interpreter at a theatre festival. She saw dancers from all over the world with different cultural backgrounds getting together and performing in perfect harmony. It inspired her to start the CONNECTION project. Since 2015 Yulia captures contemporary dancers in architectural and natural geometric backgrounds all over the world. Her visual approach is inspired by Rudolf Laban's ideas of a body as a living architecture and is aimed to emphasize the idea of connection through the geometry of the body lines. This project has been photographed in Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Russia, France, Spain, and many other European countries. Yulia met most of the dancers for the first time and in some of the collaborations, there was no mutual language except for dance.
