The exhibition shows photographic work and film-essays by German and Danish artists. In addition, a mini-library of photo books is available to browse, and films from the curators' research archive will be screened. Through essayistic strategies, the artists ask questions which are increasingly pertinent in our globalised world, such as 'What is the nature of cultural identity?', 'Where are ideas such as home and belonging to be located, in the self or in the place?, and 'How do local frames of reference interplay with supposedly global common references?’ Essayistic strategies involve the use of various types of sources and media, blending documentary and fictional material and taking on more than one narrative perspective, so problematising the idea of 'truth' in ways that allow alternative narratives and perspectives to emerge. At times the ways in which the stories are told may even seem to contradict themselves through several, overlapping voices. Though it might seem strange, in an era of so-called 'fake news’, to advocate for an art form that calls 'truth' into question, the exhibition seeks to show that the essayistic form allows for a nuanced understanding of fact, fiction, memory and perception, and can assist us in navigating a world marked by 'alternative facts'. It also offers a way to acknowledge that more differentiated concepts of culture and identity have become essential, particularly in recent years, in which long-established 'western' ideas of history and culture have been called into question. The project is founded in a long-term interest in film-essays and the history of the exchange of influence in this medium between Europe and Japan. This interest was unfolded in two earlier exhibitions held by SixtyEight Art Institute in Copenhagen and Hamburg in 2018 and 2019.
