TOM DE PEYRET
ARPA
Tom de Peyret presents a new photographic series developed over the course of a year-long research and creative process in collaboration with artist and scent designer Barnabé Fillion. This project investigates the origins of fragrances for Arpa, a creative studio founded by Fillion that blends art, science, and nature to craft unique sensory experiences. Through his photography, Tom de Peyret transforms scent into a visual language, capturing the essence of sensory transformation and pushing beyond traditional boundaries. Central to this series is an exploration of Japanese Metabolist architecture, which served as a major source of inspiration. During a journey to Japan, de Peyret and Fillion photographed these visionary architectural concepts and reconstructed never-built Metabolist structures as 3D-printed models. These models became the settings for utopian cities he imagined and photographed. Additionally, they worked in an abandoned village near Kyoto, projecting ghostly humanoid figures onto its spaces to create images that evoke a haunting interplay of presence and absence. The iris flower, a recurring motif, symbolizes the hybridity of nature and technology. De Peyret created photograms of iris flowers, transforming their forms into luminous imprints that bridge botanical origins and technological essence. He also compiled an atlas of retro-futurist architecture, contextualizing his exploration of sensory and structural hybridity. This project, comprising over 100 images, unfolds as a journey into futurist hybridity. By interweaving scent, seed, and data with architecture and memory, de Peyret constructs a layered vision of interconnected growth, inviting viewers to experience a sensory architecture where the natural and digital worlds converge.
