After a night shift, even though it’s past twelve and I still want to sleep, a deep pain in my face wakes me up. My cheekbones, temples, and the cavities behind my nose ring with a roaring sound, and even though the air pressure should be dropping, the light leaking through the blackout curtains is too strong. I don’t want to go outside, but when I try, it’s sunny. I neither walk nor stand still really, but when I stop, the horizontal traffic lights at a distant large intersection are sorting out a time that isn’t now. The wire mesh prohibiting entry under the overpass sags out of deference to the gable roofs of houses in the distance, and the sky above Kyoto Tower is cut into the shape of a grand piano. I don’t have to be lively or anything. My mouth tastes sweet and I can’t put it well into words, but I’m glad I went outside today.
