Shingo Goya

En Route by ALBUM

Diners, industrial landscapes, and decaying drive-ins. The urban and the rural. In the summer of 2025, photographer Shingo Goya journeyed through California, Oregon, and Washington. The resulting body of work captures the "scent of an era"—an America where the spirit of the 1960s and 70s still lingers.

This exhibition features his latest photographs alongside previously unreleased works. Captured through Goya’s unique lens, these original prints exude a profound beauty and a commanding presence. A highlight of the exhibition is an immersive encounter with rare stereo photography, which vividly awakens memories of the journey and evokes a mysterious sense of nostalgia in the viewer. Often called "3D photography," this technique creates a sense of depth by simultaneously viewing two images taken from slightly different perspectives. By inserting film captured with a vintage stereo camera into a period-accurate stereo viewer and peering through it like binoculars, a "depth of time"—something 2-D photography cannot fully grasp—emerges as a warm, tangible landscape. While the outlines remain soft, the atmosphere of that moment is felt so vividly that you can almost smell the air. Entirely distinct from the digital simulations of VR, this physical photographic experience resonates with the senses. It carves itself into the heart as deeply as one’s own memories, serving as a steadfast compass for the next journey.

This traveling exhibition is based on the original showcase at OFO BY INHERIT GALLERY (Daita, Tokyo) and is held with the cooperation of the gallery and PPAPERS, the publisher of the photobook ALBUM.
