Skototaxis

If most insects and people are drawn to light, then perhaps someone like myself would be akin to creatures such as centipedes or cockroaches. Moths fly toward the light and are burned to death in the flame they seek. In the shadows cast by that fire, centipedes, cockroaches, and sewer rats endure, surviving in dark places.Within contemporary Tokyo—where countless light sources and materials intermingle—I feel that there are many others like this besides myself. Where do people who dwell in shadow, who are inclined toward darkness, ultimately arrive? The photographic act I have carried out toward the outer world while asking this question may, in the end, be a search for a light called hope.
