MARGIN WITH NO BORDERS
Kyoto University’s Yoshida Dormitory is known as the oldest student self-governed dormitory in Japan. It is a unique space where individuals maintain their independence while coexisting harmoniously with diverse values. Within this environment, a delicate balance of personal distance and mutual consideration is maintained implicitly. The dormitory serves as a place where gentle dialogue and creativity flourish, drawing in people and captivating the hearts of visitors. Since 2017, Danny Morioka has documented the experiences of staying at Yoshida Dormitory and its unique charm through carefully captured photographs. Through the daily lives of the dormitory residents and conversations with them, he has encountered a rich diversity of energy. This work also explores the relationships between oneself and others, the blurred boundaries between inside and outside, and the spaces and pauses that exist in between, expressing these unique perceptions in a way that feels comforting. This exhibition, titled *Words of the Residents*, pairs photographs with the words of the dormitory residents. It invites viewers to engage in a dialogue with the residents and experience the distinctive flow of time and comforting atmosphere unique to Yoshida Dormitory.
