Making It Up

The work aims to visualize the natural and emotional relationships of people, environments and objects in simple black and white form. Using old analogue cameras, this collection also explores the relationship between the past and present through the use of objects. In this case, the object is a seventy-year old Leica M3 camera, which sat dormant in a box for two decades. It belonged to the artist’s grandfather, a photographer among many other things, who passed away when he was six years old. Receiving the archaic camera as an adult, he soon had many questions he wished to ask his grandfather about the heirloom, his work and his life. Knowing conversation was not possible, he felt the only way to better understand his grandfather was to use the same tool he once used but create his own conclusions through experience and documentation. Though the artist tries to capture subjects in their natural state, using an antiquated camera often inspires curiosity from others, many of whom he will photograph just after having conversation with them. These random interactions are a large part of the joy in photography. It’s little moments that are sometimes the most enjoyable to share.
