The Mail Address is No Longer Valid

Personal information such as one’s name, address, date of birth, and resident registration number are the only absolutely unchangeable ‘handwritten words’ that are left to us today. Liu Hsing-Yu transcribed the characters written in his family’s household register when Taiwan was under Japanese rule, painted them, and visited his ancestral homeland with his parents. The Mail Address is No Longer Valid depicts a wedding ceremony that informs the Liu family ancestors that same-sex marriage is now legal in Taiwan. Although Liu’s parents did not accept him when he first came out as gay, they agreed to participate in this project and to be photographed with his father wearing a wedding dress and his mother dressed in a suit.
