Ryuichi Ishikawa
The Inside of Life
The artist completed a survival climb, ascending a mountain with minimal equipment, securing his own food on site, and documenting the experience on film. Ishikawa says, “I have ventured deep into the natural world and experienced its overwhelming power. This enabled me to realize that things and phenomena are not distinct but linked in a continuous gradation, a cycle of which I too am part.” Here, too, he maintains the stance of capturing the essence of his subjects by engaging with them head-on through the camera lens. The viewer of these photographs may experience an unprecedented illusion of actually encountering living things.
