#05 “Photography + Theory of the Act of Shooting”

Lecturer: Yoshiaki Kai (Photography Historian)
Date: May 5 (Tue), 13:00–14:30
Venue: Horikawa Oike Gallery

Overview:
With the rapid spread of generative AI, the environment surrounding photography has undergone significant transformation. Images that resemble photographs—yet are created without the use of a camera—have become ubiquitous, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish photography from other types of images.

In this context, this lecture considers the significance of taking photographs, and in particular, engaging in photographic practice. It approaches this question through the framework of the “four-stage process of creative shooting (empathy – discovery – affirmation – worldview).”

Yoshiaki Kai
Photography historian. He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at Niigata University.

His publications include The Image as It Is: Snapshot Aesthetics and the History of Japanese Photography (University of Tokyo Press, 2021) and Suspended in Time: Life, Photography, Death (IZU PHOTO MUSEUM, 2010; co-authored with Geoffrey Batchen and Masafumi Obara). He also edited and translated Photography Theory (Getsuyosha, 2017).
