#03 “Photography + Jujutsu”

Lecturer: Keiju Kita
Date: May 4 (Mon), 13:00–14:30
Venue: Horikawa Oike Gallery

Overview:
Contemporary art has long been described as “difficult to understand.” But is it truly incomprehensible—or have we simply lacked the language to understand it?

This lecture proposes a framework for interpreting contemporary art by drawing on the structure of the manga Jujutsu Kaisen. By rethinking an artist’s unique methodology as a “technique,” the resources that sustain a work as “cursed energy,” and the frameworks of exhibition and institutions as “barriers,” the underlying mechanisms of seemingly complex works become strikingly clear.

This perspective also connects to photography—one of the most radically transforming media today. This 90-minute session explores the forefront of post/photography through the language of sorcery.

Keiju Kita
Born in Tokyo, based in Kanagawa. Researcher of contemporary photography. Part-time lecturer at Kyoto University of the Arts and Tokyo College of Photography, and affiliated with T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO.

He completed his doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Arts, Kyoto University of the Arts (Ph.D.). His research analyzes photographic expression in contemporary art under the theme of POST/PHOTOGRAPHY, examining the transformation of contemporary photography as “photographic mutations” and exploring the expansion of photography as a medium.
