Women Photographers in Taiwan: Past and Present

This talk presents an overview of the history of women photographers in Taiwan, from photographic studios during the Japanese colonial period and postwar photography groups to photographic practices since the 1980s, museum exhibitions, and contemporary international activities. While the development of photographic culture in Taiwan has often been discussed primarily through male photographers, increasing attention has recently been given to the works and activities of women photographers. Through selected examples of artists and exhibitions, the talk examines the historical background and current situation of women’s photography in Taiwan, while briefly referring to developments among women photographers in Japan and reflecting on perspectives surrounding women’s photography.

【Speaker Profile】
侯鵬暉(Hou Penghui)
Hou Penghui was born in 1982 in Taichung, Taiwan, and is currently based in Taipei. He is a photography researcher and earned his Ph.D. in Art Studies from the Graduate School of Art at Nihon University.
In 2018, he served as a curator for **TAIPEI PHOTO**. He has also been involved in Japan–Taiwan photography exchange projects at the Lightbox Photo Library in Taipei.
His research and critical writing focus on the history of photographic exhibition culture in Japan, as well as broader issues of photographic expression and photography culture. He is currently an Assistant Professor at National Taiwan Ocean University.
