In 2017, at KYOTOGRAPHIE, the work The Absence of Two was presented, in which photographer Akihito Yoshida documented his own family—his grandmother and cousin. Its sequel, The Dialogue of Two, was released in 2022.

Both works explore the theme of “absence” through Yoshida’s long-term documentation of his family, portraying unexpected turns, an eternal farewell, and a dialogue between the living and the dead.

For this event, we welcome Akiko Otake, a writer who has long observed the work of Japan’s leading photographers. Through these works that depict the in-between realm of this world and the beyond, the talk will delve into what photography is and what it means to see.
