“The Absence of Two,” a photographic record of his own family (grandmother and cousins), was presented at KYOTOGRAPHIE in 2017, and ‘The Dialogue of Two,’ a postquel to this work, was presented in 2025. Both works are a record of the artist, Akito Yoshida, who photographed his own cherished family for many years, as well as their unexpected ending and parting. As is evident from the fact that photographers from all over the world have used family as the subject of their works, family is the most familiar subject in photography, and everyone has probably taken pictures of it without thinking about it. However, because they are familiar and commonplace subjects, there are many motivations and obstacles that must be overcome before they can be sublimated into works of art. In this event, Akiko Otake, an writer and longtime observer of the work of Japan's leading photographers, will discuss the meaning of creating work on the subject of “family” and presenting it to the world, while unraveling not only Yoshida's work but also examples of many photographers' work. Yoshida's work as well as examples of many other photographers will be discussed.
