YURAGI -Formless Forms-
The theme of this work is "Yuragi" (fluctuation). The subjects are burning fire and rippling water.
Why are we so captivated by that which has no fixed form? This "Yuragi" is not merely a beautiful landscape.
It is also a mirror, reflecting the movements of the viewer’s heart and inner self.
Fire and water appear to be opposites, yet they are bound by the common concept of "purification." Fire incinerates human afflictions (bonnō), while water envelops and washes everything away. In the shape of the flames, one senses the intensity of a "scream of the soul"; in the ripples on the water, a "profound stillness."
Perhaps it is precisely because they are formless that one feels they reflect the state of one's own heart at that very moment.
This act of finding beauty in such transient, "formless things" resonates deeply with the traditional Japanese aesthetic. These works capture this purifying landscape of "Yuragi," while simultaneously serving as a record of the self's own "shape of the heart" (kokoro no katachi) at that time.
