YINTING LIOU

The word “north” once referred, for me, to a place of longing. A large city that young people head toward in search of something. A place where it felt as though one might become someone else by going there.

However, upon actually arriving in the north, what existed there was not a definite answer, but rather the sensation of losing direction within a snow-covered landscape.

In a world blanketed in white, distance and contours become indistinct, and even the sense of where one is standing begins to disappear. At the same time, only the sound beneath one’s feet, the coldness of the wind, and the sensation of breathing quietly remain.

Northward is a series of photographs that captures both the hope of heading toward the north and the time of uncertainty that follows upon arrival.

Heading north may not be an act of gaining something, but rather an act of returning to one’s own senses while gradually losing what once seemed certain.
