Threshold: Images in Flux
“Threshold: Images in Flux” presents a dialogue in artistic expression between Tamaki Yoshida and Kazuhiko Matsumura, each exploring distinct realms through their work. Yoshida’s gaze lingers on the borders between wild animals and human society, attending to traces and fragments found in the liminal space between life and death. Matsumura, on the other hand, explores not only dementia itself but also the histories of families and individuals affected by it, the relationships and connections that emerge from these experiences, and is currently continuing his fieldwork on end-of-life care.
Though their themes diverge, both artists share an interest in the elusive tremors that arise at the boundary between perception and reality, between belief and sensation. Through an approach that extracts and layers fragments—inviting viewers themselves to assemble and reconstruct the image—this exhibition becomes a space where glances and moments, gathered across different times and places, quietly resonate.
Standing before the “threshold,” the image refuses to resolve. Can we ever reach an image that is whole and unwavering, or is such clarity itself an unattainable longing? This very question gives form to that which we only presume to know—revealing, as visible presence within the gallery, a domain that lies just beyond the threshold.
