Kyoto’s creative complex sōma is an experimental place grounded in the idea of “multilayeredness.” Different elements—past and present, individual and community, work and life—overlap three-dimensionally around a central garden, forming a structure in which an ambiguous and open ma (in-between space) emerges.
In a setting where elements that would not normally meet intersect and chance occurrences arise, values and ways of thinking coexist in layered form. Could such non-singular modes of being and relating offer a kind of solace for individuals? Starting from this question, the exhibition explores these possibilities through a photography show and a ZINE. The title Grains and Waves draws on a quantum-mechanical view of the world in which multiple possibilities exist simultaneously.
Within the exhibition space, photographs by Tatsuki Katayama are layered with architecture, editing, and design to express the multilayered nature of sōma, while aiming for each visitor to take home their own questions and answers.
sōma also functions as a “living gallery” where making, showing, and archiving coexist. This exhibition attempts to design a living exhibition space that is completed only when visitors engage with the works.
