The Gestures
MINKYUNG is deeply interested in the aesthetics of the human body, which she explores through photography. One of her primary projects, The Gestures, visualizes nonverbal communication through bodily movement, conveying messages about human attitudes, emotional states, and the desire to control or respond to one’s environment.
The expressive forms (梵語:行相, Sanskrit : ākāra) that emerge through gestures function as communicative acts independent of spoken or written language. Gestures become both an answer to the questions of what to express and how, and a medium through which thought takes form. These motivated actions are revealed as phenomena—manifestations of existence itself.
To emphasize the gestures themselves, the body is partially deconstructed or fragmented, with conventional structures intentionally removed. By isolating information-dense parts such as the face, arms, and legs and minimizing their presence, the focus shifts to imagined and reconstructed movement. Through this visual language, her work establishes a connection between the human form and the expressive potential of gesture, using photography as a medium of translation.
