Photography, Between Light and Shadow

What does a photograph capture, and how is it created? This exhibition reexamines this fundamental question through light and shadow, the smallest units of photography. Rather than simply consuming photographs as images, it aims to reinterpret them at the levels of perception, materiality, and structure.

Akiko Aono captures light from everyday scenes and, through fluctuations created by digital processing, creates images that drift on the boundary between reality and existence, or images of existence emerging in various forms. Perhaps the act of "seeing" is not about capturing something concrete, but about immersing oneself in a state of fluctuation. This exhibition features works created using the classic 19th-century technique of ambrotype. Aono's practice, which moves between digital and analog, sight and touch, and memory, highlights the temporality and materiality of the photographic medium.

Mayumi Kodama, on the other hand, focuses not on light, but on the behavior of shadow. His subjects, books, are deconstructed in their meaning and function and reconstructed as monochrome images. In this exhibition, we break down the duotone structure typically used in photobooks and surround the black and gray prints with double acrylic panels, presenting the photographs not as flat surfaces but as layers that fluctuate depending on the viewpoint. Furthermore, by compiling a series of works based on books into a photobook, we reexamine their roles as both a support medium and a recording device.

The light contained within the silver and the shadows that emerge from the layers. Through these differences and intersections, we aim to provide viewers with an opportunity to reexamine their own act of "looking at photographs."
