“LA TAI MEI” is a colloquial term that has circulated within Taiwanese society, referring to an image of women associated with strength, directness, and a commanding presence.

This project takes the layered meanings attached to the term as its point of departure and unfolds as a collaborative work combining photography, calligraphy, and spatial installation. Photographer Makoto Lin (林育良) and calligrapher He Jingchuang (何景窗) examine how the image of a woman who symbolizes the nation has been placed, framed, and seen across different contexts. Through this figure, they explore the conditions under which images come to occupy specific spaces and the ways they are collectively viewed.

In this series, portraits of a female figure who has appeared in public and symbolic spaces as a head of state are repeated and reconfigured, detached from specific events or moments in time. Through this process, the figure is re-conceived not as an individual subject, but as a landscape. What comes into focus is not who is depicted, but how the image is positioned, circulated, and shared under particular regimes of gaze.

The calligraphic works do not serve to explain the photographs. Instead, they intervene as poetic, fragmentary gestures, unsettling fixed interpretations and redirecting the viewer’s pace and orientation of looking. Within the exhibition space, photography and calligraphy are arranged in a responsive dialogue. The viewer, often unconsciously, finds themselves situated within a structure of looking that evokes a ritualized form of spectatorship.

LA TAI MEI is a quiet inquiry into how figures that come to symbolize the nation are shared and remembered within specific sites and landscapes. The work opens a space in which viewers are invited to reconsider their own position, attitude, and participation in the act of seeing.
