Le Labo: The Essence of Slow Perfumery
This exhibition is inspired by The Essence of Slow Perfumery, authored by Deborah Royer, Global Brand President and Creative Director of Le Labo Fragrances. Created to mark the 20th anniversary of Le Labo, the book brings together essays, photographs, conversations, and reflections that articulate the philosophy of slow perfumery—an approach rooted in individually hand-blending fragrances, each born at the moment of its request. It explores themes such as artisanship, memory, the language of scent, environments that invite stillness, and the influence of wabi-sabi as a way of embracing imperfection.
Presented on the second floor of the Le Labo Kyoto Machiya lab (an approximately 150-year old traditional home) in a tatami room, the exhibition engages with the ideas and fragments contained in the book, examining how they take form as words, images, and records. Rather than offering a sensory experience of fragrance itself or presenting a fixed narrative, the exhibition unfolds as an open, contemplative landscape, revealing the ideas, disciplines, and intentional choices that quietly shape what Le Labo creates.
