Light and Presence -Scenes emerging on wet plates-

When I was a child, I built my own secret hideout in the nearby mountains. Imitating the family Shinto altar and Buddhist altar at home, I placed a glass marble I had picked up on the beach deep inside the hut. The sunlight filtering through the gaps illuminated the bubbles in the glass marble, making it sparkle every time the wind blew. I remember feeling a slight sense of awe and fear at that sight. The atmosphere drifting between that light, shadow, and myself is something that shouldn't really be captured in a photograph. However, that thrilling, spine-tingling sensation can indeed be felt within two-dimensional images. This time, I attempt to reconstruct that mysterious phenomenon using wet plate photography.Wet plate photography is one of the ancient photographic techniques introduced to Japan from abroad during the late Edo period. Unlike modern photography, where materials are distributed as industrial products, the chemicals must be handmade, and everything from shooting to developing is done manually. The climatic conditions at the time and the creator's physical state also influence how the image appears. The patterns that emerge during the development process are irreproducible and unique. I overlaid onto those mysterious and organic forms the atmosphere and time that should be invisible in photographs. In this exhibition, I express a world that emerges alongside the accidental patterns of wet plate photography (ambrotype).
