SANCTUARY

In 2020, as the pandemic reached its peak and the entertainment industry was pushed aside with the sentiment that “this is not the time,” the artist declared that art does not die. Continuing to create self-portraits in their own room, the artist built spaces in which to present their work.

As the world reopened, war erupted, and an even more chaotic reality emerged. Where should we place our focus, and what should we choose to see?

Through this process, the artist arrived at a realization: it is only humans who are dancing, while the world itself has been perfect and filled with magic from the very beginning. In attempting to depict a sanctuary that transcends time, space, and the boundary between this world and the next, the artist comes to understand that the universe ultimately returns to a single drop—a small, fragile light.

“How far that little candle throws his beams!
So shines a good deed in a weary world.”
— William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice, Act V, Scene I

This exhibition is a testament to the fact that SANCTUARY overflows in all the places that surround us.
