Jinn Yagi

This work is an attempt to visualize the individuality, presence, and aura contained within each person by layering three-dimensional structures over urban landscapes I have photographed, portraits created as artworks, and portraits of people who have visited my previous exhibitions.
Through this exhibition, I aim to express a variety of aspects and perspectives that emerge as multiple viewpoints, times, and emotions intersect.

The skin becomes a canvas,
and the eyes reflect interest, affection, and confidence toward others,
while simultaneously holding complex psychological states such as tension, anxiety, deception, and the virtual.

In recent years, within social media spaces,
the continuous expression of opinions, emotions, and daily life has come to be treated as proof of one’s existence.
At the same time, however, many people are quietly becoming exhausted and beginning to distance themselves from expressing their true voices.

In this work, an acrylic panel engraved with a crystal pattern is layered in front of each portrait,
allowing the photograph to exist not merely as a flat image, but as a three-dimensional artwork.

The structure reflects and disperses light,
evoking the excessive refraction of information in digital space,
while physically obstructing the subject’s facial expression.

This becomes one form of isolation in contemporary society—
something that cannot be easily visualized,
nor easily understood.

After the COVID-19 pandemic,
the distance between people appears to have been reduced through technology.
Yet in reality, for those who choose silence,
society has become easier to live in,
and at the same time, a more solitary place.

Still, the innocent gaze of a child
can sometimes make us momentarily forget all of this complexity.
