Kim Sae-hyun
Kim Sae-hyun is the nephew of artist Ryu Hyunmin. Sae-hyun spent his early childhood living with the artist and his family, growing up in a shared domestic environment that blurred the boundaries between family and art. To Ryu, Sae-hyun is more than just a nephew; he embodies multiple roles—a brother, a son, and at times, a friend. This layered relationship became the foundation of Ryu’s ongoing photographic exploration.
The project initially emerged as a personal gesture: an attempt to capture the warmth and fragility of family moments. However, as the work evolved, Ryu became increasingly aware of the distance created by his dual position as both a family member and an artist. His intention to take simple family photographs was inevitably transformed by the awareness that these images would be viewed, exhibited, and consumed within the context of art. This consciousness complicated his approach and introduced a subtle tension between sincerity and representation.
For Ryu, the notion of a “family photograph” has become a kind of unattainable ideal—a utopia of emotional truth that continually slips away under the weight of artistic intention. Within this space, Kim Sae-hyun exists not merely as a subject but as a presence that oscillates between personal and social dimensions. He is at once the focus of emotional attachment, a mirror through which familial love is refracted, and a figure whose portrayal reflects the artist’s shifting understanding of what it means to see, to represent, and to belong.
