HARUMICHI SAITO,TAKESHI SUMI

The Insight of Being

Those who gaze upon existence to expand its boundaries, and those who strive to reclaim that which is passing away. While employing distinct perspectives and approaches, Harumichi Saito and Takeshi Sumi both confront the essence of human existence, driven by a shared desire to breathe life into it once more.

Both humanity and the world are in a constant state of flux. Amidst this transience, Saito’s photography embodies an unconditional affirmation of a world where the boundaries between the self and others dissolve. His work is a "prayer for a scene that remains unchanged for all eternity." Finding a "divine presence" within nature and children, Saito immerses himself in the overwhelming, primordial power of the photographic medium.

For Sumi, on the other hand, photography is an act of resistance against oblivion. As if defying the moment when a life lost fades into light and loses its "substance," Sumi applies embroidery directly onto the photographic paper. When the thread imparts a three-dimensional mass to the image, it captures a fleeting glimpse of "eternity."

This exhibition features photographs from Saito’s Mythology series, while Sumi’s selection centers on works from his forthcoming book. Both artists will present primarily framed works, offered as a collection.
