Is This Also Photography? — Visualizing the Boundaries of "Photography"
In an era where "photographs" saturate our world more than ever before in human history, their definition has become unprecedentedly ambiguous.
f∞ studio is an art research collective that explores the boundaries of "photography." Much like setting a camera's aperture to infinity (f∞), we dismantle existing frameworks to bring every phenomenon into focus.
f∞ studio proposes a new concept: "Pan-graphy." Transcending the conventional definition of "fixing light" with a camera, this concept encompasses all phenomena that possess the transformative functions of "recording" or "recollection"—regardless of the presence of a physical image. Its scope extends from garbage bags as encapsulated traces of daily life, to musical scores as playback devices that evoke and generate sound, and even to the evocation of memory through absence.
This exhibition reconstructs "Pan-graphy"—images collected and tagged via past workshops and a dedicated app as the very embodiment of the question "Is this also photography?"—within the exhibition space.
The exhibition's defining feature is the physical visualization of "boundary lines" based on voting data from users worldwide. By positioning works along coordinate axes determined by approval rates for the question "Is this also photography?", the wavering boundaries of definition emerge within the physical space. In this place where the gazes and logic of countless others intersect, viewers will find themselves re-examining the phenomenon of "photography" itself.
