Yoshida Domitory, Kyoto University

Yoshida Dormitory, the oldest student dormitory currently existing in Japan, has a 112-year history and is still home to more than one hundred students enrolled at Kyoto University. Not only humans but also various birds, cats, and insects, all have their place in the dormitory. It is the place where the neighborhood dog comes to play, escaping from the house. Unfortunately, on April 26, 2019, Kyoto University filed a lawsuit against 45 dormitory students living in the Old Building, a two-story wooden structure built in 1913, demanding that the students vacate the building. The university claims that the main reason for the lawsuit is the deterioration of the building. The lawsuit, however, also includes the Dining Hall, a building which has been earthquake-proofed and repaired. On February 16, 2024, the first instance of this lawsuit ended in a partial victory for the students, which is a historical achievement. We want to keep on this irreplaceable place, Yoshida Dormitory.
