Welcome to Our Lives. Let’s Engage in Dialogue.

This exhibition showcases the creativity and resilience of young people living in Kibera, Nairobi, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements. Despite limited resources, they repurpose discarded materials and use vibrant colors to craft unique living spaces. Their monthly rent, approximately 2,500–3,000 yen, mirrors the cost of living in Kyoto University’s Yoshida Dormitory, where this exhibition is hosted. Over its 100-year history, Kibera has endured challenges such as disease, crime, and forced evictions. Yet, its residents have built a community rooted in shared values and collective strength. Through this exhibition, visitors can not only glimpse these lives through photographs but also connect directly with the individuals featured, via live online conversations. These dialogues offer a rare opportunity to engage with the stories behind the images, deepening understanding and challenging preconceptions. Visitors are invited to reflect on their own perspectives through these meaningful exchanges. Built on 11 years of trust and collaboration in Kibera, this exhibition seeks to connect distant communities, foster empathy, and inspire new realizations.
