Mababu ー Spirit of the Ancestors
The Art of Color – Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents
Pamela Tulizo (born in 1993, Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) is a photographer based in Goma. She went on to win the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents in 2020.
Her latest project, MABABU – Spirit of the Ancestors, is a collaborative series that reinterprets and reenacts scenes from the history of slavery originating on the African continent.Through a dozen carefully composed photographs, Tulizo sheds light on the often-forgotten roles of women in the transatlantic slave trade, placing them in settings tied to the economic drivers of slavery—cotton plantations, tobacco fields, domestic labor, and sexual exploitation. With this project, she pays tribute to these overlooked heroines, celebrating their courage, resilience, and strength.
