Cutting Surface
This exhibition presents a group of photographs that have been taken and arbitrarily cropped again. The photographs are cropped scenes from ‘somewhere.’ This group of works, “Cutting Surface,” presents works in which the act of ‘cropping’ was applied not only to a scene but also to printed photographs. Photographs seem to indicate ‘somewhere’. However, they are only a small part of ‘somewhere’ and do not tell everything about the original scenes. The photograph, which is a flat, cropped image, carries only a fraction of the original scene. The thickness of the flat surface emphasizes the section that has been cut out. Can this reveal the photographer's arbitrary and their traces in a plane that has been cut out of ‘somewhere’? What can we know about the original scene by further cropping the cropped scene?
