Moritz Holfelder

The sea breathes

Moritz Holfelder has been photographing waves and water surfaces since the age of ten. His view has changed accordingly over the decades – the sea as an eagerly awaited vacation destination has given way to a much more complex perception. He has explored the rhythm of waves, studied currents and developed a feeling for spray. It is about discovering graphic patterns in nature, about the fascination of the threatening power of water and about the sea as a living organism that breathes in the surging and crashing of the surf – comparable to the rhythm of the human lungs, which inhale, exhale and pause briefly in between. Holfelder explores the relationship between man and water and also shows how defenceless, small and insignificant we appear in the face of the elemental force of the sea. The exhibition begins with views of the sea from afar, photographed from cliffs and precipices. In the long corridor between the gallery space, the shrine and the Nō Theatre, it then rhythmizes different wave forms step by step, and ends on the large stage with close-up photos of mostly still water surfaces, as if one were walking along a coast, a lake or a river and looking down on the rippling, sky-reflecting or meditatively flowing element.
