Kiyoshi Nishioka

In the Twilight of Life: Or Shall We Be Reborn?

Modern society is exposed to a ceaseless flow of information, and is in a state of extreme ambiguity, where the real and the fake, the fictitious, and the controlled all blend together. Kiyoshi Nishioka seeks to address this contemporary condition through his photographic expression.
Nishioka’s work moves back and forth between reality, fiction and fakery, exploring new possibilities for expression, free from photography’s inherent constraints in this age in which the reality in photography is being lost. His works blur the boundaries of photographic reality and create new perspectives.

Nowadays, when we look at photographs and videos, we can’t help wondering whether they were produced by AI technology. Nishioka’s works fuse photographic reality with pictorial imagery as an approach to this contemporary situation. As a result, they go beyond mere visual beauty to pose such questions as “What is reality?” and “Where is the boundary between recording and creation?”
