With the widespread use of smartphones, viewing social media has become as natural as breathing. In today’s society, our behavior and appearance on social media have become as important as how we present ourselves in the physical world. At the heart of this self-image construction is “photography.” The rise of a culture where individuals curate and broadcast their lives has brought photography closer to everyday life than ever before.
On the other hand, within the art photography world, photography seems to be increasingly deified—as a counteraction to its ubiquity in everyday society. In this way, contemporary photography finds itself in a state of chaos, polarized between being sanctified in the art world and seamlessly integrated into everyday life. Precisely because of this unstable and uncertain foundation, it becomes all the more meaningful to examine the nature and expandability of photography through the work of various artists. Doing so may broaden the scope of photography and offer a renewed appreciation of its potential.
This exhibition explores the possibilities of photography through the visual acts and photographic sensibilities of seven artists:
• Iseuyu, who integrates experiences from other creative fields into photography, using the medium as a central axis.
• Natsumi Giniro, who expresses perceptual errors—such as those related to vision, object recognition, and the brain’s compensatory mechanisms—through photography.
• Issei Kouda, who examines the relationship between image and object through the lenses of design, architecture, sculpture, craft, and publishing.
• Hikaru Tachibana, who takes interest in pre-photographic matters and uses a craft-based approach to create his work.
• Yuki Nakazawa, who critically examines the nature of photography and the conditions of the photography world itself.
• Ryota Hayashi, who explores the overwhelming and simultaneous flood of images and information in today’s media-saturated society.
• Yui Moriyoshi, who questions and expresses the influence of daily image consumption through social media, smartphones, AI, and image manipulation technologies.
Through each artist’s unique perspective on photography, this exhibition invites you to experience the dynamic potential of the medium—an exhibition that shakes the very notion of what “photography” can be.
