Kiyoshi Nishioka|Photographer / Artist
Born in Osaka in 1976. After studying fashion design, he traveled abroad for two years to experience how design is born from nature and everyday environments. His path as a photographer began through documentary photography. Since 2015, he has been based in Higashiyoshino Village in Nara Prefecture, creating works through photography, video, and installations that explore relationships between people, nature, and place. With a focus on the perception of time, space, and in-betweenness (“awai”), his notable work Matomani highlights presence and emptiness. He received the Miki Jun Encouragement Award for Photography.
His current project KIWA (meaning “threshold” or “edge”), exhibited at KG+ SELECT, addresses environmental changes, societal structures, and human reality — reflecting on the nature of the present era itself. In 2023, he established the Matomani Studio in Higashiyoshino Village.
Shinpei Aoki|Thinker / Social Worker
Born in 1983 and raised in Urawa City, Saitama (now Saitama City). Holds a PhD in literature and is a certified social worker. Since 2014, he has made the experimental online radio program Omurice Radio his life’s work. In 2016, he moved to Higashiyoshino Village in Nara Prefecture and opened his home as an independent humanities library, Lucha Libro. While also involved in job assistance and youth work, he actively writes and lectures.
His publications include Indigenous Thinking as a Weapon (Toyo Keizai), A Handmade Asylum (Shobunsha), The Library of the Other Shore (co-authored with his wife Mio Aoki, published by Yushobo), and the Yamagaku Note series (H&S Company), among others.
