“KG+ SELECT 10 YEARS, 10 ARTISTS” Commemorative Cross Talk #3: Tamaki Yoshida & Kazuhiko Matsumura

To celebrate the publication of the photo book commemorating the 10th anniversary of the KG+ SELECT Award, we will host a cross talk event featuring past award winners. The speakers will reflect on their journeys from receiving the KG+ Award to exhibiting at KYOTOGRAPHIE, and share insights into their current practices as photographers.

If you would like to attend the event, please gather at the reception on the 1st floor of TIME’S 15 minutes prior to the start time.
A book signing by the artists will follow the event.

Speakers

Tamaki Yoshida
(KG+ SELECT Award 2021 Winner / KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025 Artist)
While active as a commercial photographer for various companies, Yoshida began a personal project in 2018 to re-examine the unequal relationship between humans and nature—a concern she had long felt. Rather than approaching environmental issues from a distant or overwhelming perspective, her work explores human-nature-animal relationships from a more familiar, intimate angle. Her current projects address environmental issues caused by domestic wastewater and the increasing frequency of accidents between humans and wild animals. Rather than focusing solely on the tragic aspects of animal life, Yoshida questions the rigidity of human thinking and unconscious behavior, striving to discover new ways of balancing human and non-human lives.

Kazuhiko Matsumura
(KG+ SELECT Award 2022 Winner)
Born in 1980, Matsumura joined the Kyoto Shimbun newspaper as a journalist in 2003. In 2005, he became a photojournalist and began long-term projects focusing on “life,” “social security,” and “care.” His dementia project Threads of the Mind was awarded the Asia regional winner in the Open Format category of the World Press Photo Contest 2024. He also served as project manager for World Press Photo Exhibition 2024 Kyoto, held at the former printing press site beneath the Kyoto Shimbun building—the first Japan-hosted edition of the event in three years. His previous project Invisible Rainbow traced the history of Japan’s social security system through the life of Dr. Kazumitsu Hayakawa, and was exhibited at KG+ in 2019.
