“The window is a line, like a limit or frontier that cannot be crossed.” Sandra Guldemann Duchatellier catches instances of Japanese life behind this “window”, as if unable to be truly part of it, creating imagery of a Japan as seen through the Western imagination. Playing with reality and introducing multiple layers of possible meaning, the work reflects the artist’s spirit in relation to Japan. Captured also are snippets of interactions between window and subject. In either case, the artist is not visible, hiding somewhere, behind.
